Date Night In

There’s a documentary on Netflix called Somm that is a must-watch if you’re at all interested in wine. It’s about a group of guys who are preparing to take the Master Sommelier Exam. With a swirl, sniff, and taste, they can identify the type, year, and region of a given wine, as well as crazy-specific tasting notes.

After watching it, Chris and I have been trying different wines and seeing if we can identify the tasting notes, and Chris got us a nice bottle of wine for a date night in …

Hermes the Cat

Our sommelier for the evening, Hermes!

Domaine Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Toussaints 2009 Pinot Noir

The wine: 2009 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Cent-Vignes pinot noir.

Raw Asparagus to be Sauteed with Olive Oil

Dripping Candlesticks

It only seemed appropriate to light the candlesticks.

Asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce, Filet Mignon

To go with the wine, we cooked filet mignon and asparagus with hollandaise sauce. Delicious!

We really enjoyed the wine and properly identified cherries and cranberries!

Nikki and Hermes the Cats

It felt like a double-date with the cats watching us so intently 😉 (We all know they were just begging for a taste of the filet mignon.)

Dark Chocolate

For dessert, I had a little bit of bitter dark chocolate while we watched Star Trek. It was a perfect night at home!

We’re such homebodies that many times we prefer a date night in. Plus, it’s cheaper, and nine times out of 10, we enjoy the food we cook at home more than what we get out at restaurants.  The only downside? Having to do dishes after dinner!

  1. That documentary sounds so interesting, I’ll have to check it out! I just watched BlackFish and it was soooooo sad!

  2. I love watching documentaries on Netflix! I’ve been on a mission to get into red wine lately as well (I’m somewhat ashamed to admit I usually just grab the moscato with the cutest label) I’ll have to check it out

  3. You and Chris should definitely attend the Nantucket Wine Festival! My own Chris and I went last year and it was fantastic! They have all sorts of classes–I definitely recommend the Artisan Cheeses class with Ishan Gurdal if they’re still doing it. You should also check out the Harbor Gala, and the Grand tastings.

  4. we had a similar night this past saturday (we even tried a new bottle of red — a tempanrillo) and felt a bit.. well.. homebodyish using our weekend to have a date-night in. but, of course, it was definitely worth it.. and you’re right about the food usually being better 🙂

  5. WHAT A GREAT DATE NIGHT. 😀 Pierre-Charles and I want to come to the next one!! We are wine lovers, too, and also enjoy exploring new ones and doing tastings. Your meal looks delicious AND seems like very appropriate accompaniment for a Pinot Noir ! 🙂 Well done!
